Types of air conditioning: VRF systems

Making sure you choose the right system is very important - and we can provide you with expert advice following a FREE site survey. In this type of fixed air conditioning, VRF refers to variable refrigerant flow, the key feature of these powerful and flexible systems.

What's right for you?

Our engineers and installation specialists will guide you through the process. How much control do you need over your climate? Do you want cooling only, or ventilation and heating as well? How many rooms will be covered and how big are they: sizing is critical.

What's the room used for, as different activities have different needs? How many people use the space, what's the solar gain if any, and how much heat-generating office or mechanical equipment is there? Equipment choice is also influenced by where you can place the unit or units. Is there a false ceiling, or free space on walls? If so, what's the optimum height?

What are VRF systems?

High-end VRF (Variant Refrigerant Flow) fixed air conditioning systems are also known as VRV (Variant Refrigerant Volume) systems.

They consist of a number of air handling units connected to a single external condensing unit and enable refrigerant flow to be changed through sophisticated controls, using either an inverter-controlled variable speed compressor, or multiple compressors of varying capacities. This means the system responds quickly and efficiently to changes in the cooling or heating requirements in the space covered: each indoor unit can control individual room temperature.

The life expectancy of these versatile and powerful fixed installations is 15-20 years dependent on equipment usage, environmental exposure and location, and maintenance.

No two customers or locations are the same. That's why Andrews specialises in bespoke installations for organisations large or small, whether it's a retrofit into an existing space or a new build project.

What products are available?

We'll recommend and install the right systems for your location and environment, based on:

  • Application friendly design - high performance and high efficiency plus space-saving design and low noise features
  • Environmentally aware design - less refrigerants used and energy saving components
  • Installation friendly design - fast and non-disruptive installation, automatic refrigerant charging, containments checks and powerful diagnostics
  • User friendly design - easy-to-use controls, with advanced control options available

Using equipment from leading manufacturers including Daikin, Fujitsu and Toshiba we offer two main types of VRF systems:

A single outdoor unit connects to multiple indoor units. However, each indoor unit is capable of individual room temperature control, providing enormous control and flexibility.

A wide range of high performance indoor units is available, to meet diverse space and location requirements. These are connected to external units using pipework and refrigerant network joints. Water-cooled VRF systems are also available.
